At Leytonstone School, we are committed to ensuring that every pupil has full access to a broad and balanced curriculum, regardless of any medical condition. We understand that health issues can be a source of anxiety for both pupils and parents, and our goal is to provide a safe, inclusive environment where medical needs are managed with dignity and minimal disruption to learning.
Our Core Commitment
We recognise that medical conditions can be permanent or temporary, and that they may affect a student’s physical wellbeing, mental health, and academic progress. Our approach is centered on:
- Safety: Ensuring staff are trained and emergency procedures are clear.
- Inclusion: Adapting activities so all students can participate safely.
- Partnership: Working closely with parents, healthcare professionals, and the pupils themselves.
Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs)
For pupils with long-term or complex medical needs, we develop an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP). This document acts as a roadmap for the pupil's care during the school day.
An IHP typically includes:
- Details of the medical condition and its triggers.
- Medication requirements (dosage, side effects, and storage).
- Emergency contact details and procedures.
- Specific support needed for the student’s educational, social, and emotional needs.
Managing Medication at School
To maintain a safe environment, we follow strict protocols for the administration of medication:
- Consent: No medication will be administered without prior written parental consent.
- Original Packaging: All medication must be provided in its original container as dispensed by a pharmacist, including the prescriber’s instructions.
- Self-Management: Where appropriate, we encourage secondary pupils to manage their own medication (e.g., asthma inhalers or adrenaline auto-injectors). However, these must still be registered with the school office.
- Storage: Non-emergency medication is stored securely in the Medical Room. Emergency medication is kept in an easily accessible, known location.
Staff Training and Awareness
We ensure that staff are aware of the medical needs of the pupils they teach. This includes:
- Specialised Training: Specific staff members receive in-depth training from healthcare professionals to perform medical procedures or administer rescue medication when required.
