The Governing Body

Kate Lord - Chair of governors

I have recently been elected to this post as our current chair Peter Watkins is leaving to start a new life with his family in Devon.
I am also a parent governor, my son is in Year 10 .
I became a Governor because I wanted to be involved with the school and support the work of the staff and students.
I was also a Governor when my boys were at Primary School.
I run a small business in Walthamstow where we do adult qualification training so I have some idea about budgeting, staffing and dealing with challenging situations!

Alan Jeffery - Community Governor

In my day job I work for the Department for Education.  Currently I am looking at child poverty, of which there is much more than many might imagine and which can have a real and lasting effect on a young person's chances of doing well in life. A rich, supportive and yet challenging school life can really help overcome the disadvantages of family circumstances. Previously I have worked on policies around the school workforce.  Getting the right people in the right jobs in the right schools and giving them the right training and development is another key factor. So too is minimising the bureaucracy schools face while keeping headteachers accountable for the very large sums of public money they spend - another area on which I have worked recently.. So, I thought I should leave my ivory tower in Whitehall sometimes to see how schools really work and Leytonstone gave me the opportunity to do so. I am also a Trustee of Redbridge Citizens' Advice Bureau which gives me another perspective on the challenges families and young people face in this sector of northeast London.

Robert Wilkinson – Community Governor

I have been on the Governing Body for over 10 years. My particular interests are finance, staffing and the environment of the school. Originally a governor nominated by a political party, I am now a community governor.
I am a retired local government officer; subsequently I have taken up a new career as a freelance oral historian for the British Library. I am treasurer of the Oral History Society

Heather Chevannes – Sponsor Governor

When the opportunity arose to be HSBC’s sponsor governor, I was delighted to be on the Governing Body. I have two daughters, the eldest achieved very good results in her GCSE’s at Leytonstone School, she is now looking at university places, my youngest is in year 10.

Being on the Governing Body for over six years I have seen Leytonstone School go from strength to strength.

I am always happy to support the school in any way I can and predominantly with matters relating to Business Studies, Enterprise and finance.

Marie Pye – Local Authority Governor

I have been a governor for several years and I am also a local councillor for Leytonstone ward, although I was a governor before I was a councillor. I became a governor because I really care about Leytonstone School as our local secondary school. As a governor I can both scrutinise and support the school.

Rukhsana Yaqoob - Community Governor

I was a former pupil at Leytonstone School as well as a former Teacher. I was deputy headteacher at Connaught School for Girls. I am now a Narrowing the Gap Regional Adviser with the National Strategies. My job is to raise attainment of Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Turkish and Somali pupils. I live in the local area.

Steve White - Teacher Governor

I Have been elected teacher governor for a second term. My interest in serving as a governor is primarily to defend two principles that I hold dear. The first is to ensure that that all children receive a fully comprehensive, state education and the second is to try to ensure that all the staff's interests are represented through my involvement as a governor. I believe that education should be excellent for all children in all schools and free from interference from vested business interests which increasingly encroach upon the comprehensive ideal. I work as an elected union officer three days a week as well as teaching History at Leytonstone School two days a week. I am on the national steering committee of the Anti Academies Alliance and also on two advisory bodies of the National Union of Teachers- for secondary education and Academies and Free Schools.

Carrie Paechter - Parent Governor

I am a Professor of Education at Goldsmiths, University of London, where I specialise in issues around gender and education. I teach undergraduates about identity and gender in relation to children and education. In the past I have conducted research into tomboys, design and technology education and cross-curricular issues. I started my career as a secondary mathematics teacher and have worked in schools in Newham, Haringey and Lewisham. I live locally with my two sons, one of whom is a former Leytonstone student and the other who is still at the school.
