Introduction
In this course students continue to develop their skills in designing and making, using food as the design material. They will examine the development of food products in the commercial context as well as enjoying the practical and useful activity of cooking.
The course provides opportunities for students to apply aesthetic, moral, social, economic and industrial awareness in their design work. Students are encouraged to use a range of communication skills, including verbal, graphical, ICT and modelling skills, to help their thinking and their ability to take action in the process of designing.
Topics covered will include:
- Food packaging, labelling and advertising.
- Food testing and comparisons.
- Hygiene and safety related to food production.
- Skills building
- The properties of good materials – physical, sensory and nutritional.
- It is a requirement of the specification that candidates know about the work of professional designers within the world of Food.
This GCSE course is 40% examination (Unit 1) and 60% Controlled Assessment based (Unit 2). Students will be asked to undertake one Controlled Assessment Task that has been divided into two sections. This GCSE will involve a lot of writing, researching, analysis and problem solving.
Why Food Technology?
Students will choose this subject if they want to develop their knowledge in the Food Technology field.
An important element of this course is practical production (cooking) so students must be prepared to take part in this activity.

Introduction
This is a design and make course where students work with paper, card and plastic as their main materials. An understanding of the design process is developed through focussed practical tasks and projects. Students will build on knowledge, skills and understanding from Years 7 to 9.
This GCSE course is 60% coursework based and 40% examination. Students will be asked to undertake two pieces of coursework for the GCSE. This GCSE will involve a lot of writing, researching, analysis and problem solving.
The coursework is to be done in the classroom.
Why Graphics?
Students who enjoy Art, Drawing and model making will find this course interesting.
Students will be able to develop their drawing techniques and designing skills.

This is a design and make course where students have the opportunity to create quality products using wood, metal and plastic. Students will build on knowledge, skills and understanding from Years 7 to 9 and develop an understanding of the design process through a series of focussed practical tasks and projects.
This GCSE course is 60% coursework based and 40% examination. This GCSE will involve a lot of writing, researching, analysis and problem solving. The coursework is to be done in the classroom.
Why Resistant Materials?
You will choose this subject if you enjoy the practical aspect of design as well as the drawing and design aspect.
An in-depth knowledge of processes, equipment, materials, drawing techniques and safe working practices will be required.
